STOP PRESS: Event takes place February 2020, St Aidan's High School, Constance Green Hall, Harrogate
This annual event is built upon the Harrogate Brigantes club members' vision following a similar initiative from Rotary clubs in the Home Counties. The first Yorkshire event was held in Harrogate in 2002, when five schools and 11 teams competed. There are now 12 similar tournaments across Yorkshire whilst an estimated 4000 students take part across the country.
The event is organised by the Rotary Clubs of Harrogate Brigantes, Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon, Ripon Rowels and Lower Wharfedale. Teams of students aged 11 - 18 years, from 12 schools in Harrogate and neighbouring areas, go head-to-head in a one-day event, to test their logistical and practical skills in this annual tournament.Teams comprise four students at three age groups - Foundation; Intermediate and Advanced.
The Teams have no idea of their task until the tournament begins. They bring their own tools and are provided with a selection of materials from which they have to produce a specified working model. The level of complexity of the task increases as the age of the team rises and completion is restricted to a tight time schedule. The challenge combines a number of skills in a fun way. Design and technology skills will be required, together with innovation, communication, problem solving, decision-making, risk taking and creativity, if the goal is to be achieved. Each team also must produce a written design and construction portfolio to show clearly how they arrived at their finished model."
