This December Harrogate Brigantes’ business group, The Catalysts, decided to spread a little festive cheer by donating £500 to help those in need at Christmas. This was split equally between a project to feed the homeless on Christmas Day and The Snowball, which collects Christmas presents for needy children.
The first charity Snowball was held 71 years ago and the event takes place in Harrogate every December. This year’s ball was on Saturday 8 December at The Old Swan Hotel, with the purpose of the evening being for guests to bring unwrapped toys for distribution by the NSPCC to needy children in the Leeds & Harrogate areas at Christmas time.
This year the collection was boosted by toys to the value of £250, kindly donated by The Catalysts. Pictured are Sally Bickerton (right), Chair of the Snowball, and Charlotte Gale, a member of The Catalysts who also has close connections with the Snowball. The toys were purchased from local shops in Knaresborough and Harrogate, thus also supporting the local economy.
Snowball Chair Sally Bickerton commented “the Snowball committee were very touched by this generous donation from The Catalysts, which meant that our Santa’s sleigh was even fuller than usual this year. I am also so pleased that the group decided to support local businesses by purchasing the toys from shops in Knaresborough and Harrogate. Thank you to all involved."
In addition to the toys, money raised from a raffle on the evening is donated to local children's causes. Most recent donations have been to support the work of The Woodlands Children's Ward at Harrogate District Hospital, plus a new online platform helping children suffering from Type 1 Diabetes and their families.
