Bill, who is a member of our Club provided an in depth talk about his upbringing in Glasgow and how he became a member of the Civil Service for 33⅓ years.
He left school with 8 O Levels and 3 Higher. With encouragement, he applied for a position in the Civil Service as a Clerical Officer at Harrogate and was successful. Bill occupied many positions with a starting monthly salary of £22.19! Throughout his career he held posts – Counter Supervisor, Social Security – Special Investigator, DHSS – Visiting Officer, Regional Training Centre, London – Deputy Manager, dealing with Systems, Statistics, Budgets, Human Resources and Leeds Quarry House managing staff with Specialisms of Complaint investigation, Promotion Boards and Pensions. After 33⅓ years of service he retired in 1997. Bill had quite an incredible journey in his employment which required considerable commitment. A very interesting talk – well done Bill.
